Last Saturday I woke up with this overwhelming need for an adventure. My equally spontaneous friend, Taylor, and I quickly packed up for a trip to the Arizona-Utah border. I cannot imagine it could have turned out any better!
2 PM: Tuba City is a nice mid-way stop if you’re taking 89 North, from Flagstaff/Sedona. Here, we spent an hour exploring Dinosaur Tracks. It was super cool seeing well-preserved footprints and bones, plus all sorts of rocks. Make sure your eyes are peeled for the homemade signs off the highway + bring cash for a Navajo guide to show you around.
Also in Tuba City is The Hogan, a Navajo restaurant. The TripAdvisor reviews are underwhelming but others we met in Page praised their fry bread and Navajo tacos!
4 PM: The most poorly advertised landmark ever: Horseshoe Bend! Just after the Glen Canyon Dam (which you could also check out), the Overlook Trail of Horseshoe Bend is just over a mile, super flat, and not to be missed.
5:30-ish PM: Arrive at Lone Rock! Just over the Utah border, this bomb campground is on the literal shore of Lake Powell. Discovered accidentally during a March roadtrip, I have been high-key dying to come back. Pick up firewood beforehand at any gas station in Page, and spend your evening looking at the stars + enjoying the quiet. Cost is $7/car for America the Beautiful pass-holders, or $14/car.
If you’re not interested in camping, there are a handful of regular ole chain hotels in Page – but please at least go check out Lake Powell!
9 AM: Take a hour-long tour of Lower Antelope Canyon. We used Ken’s Tours and were very satisfied; however, it’s hard to imagine a bad time walking through the slot canyon. You can tour all day, but I’ve heard for optimal light, the earlier, the better. Cost was $33/person, including the Navajo Park Fee, and totally worth it. 2 PM: On your way back south, take a detour to stop at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Entering from the east side of the park, you can climb up the Desert View Watchtower and have lunch at either Lipan Point or Moran Point, two A+ overlooks as you continue driving west into the park.
